Marie Antionette. The poor girl. Her only crime was getting married young and having parties. They cut her head off anyway.
Facts about her fabulous, if short, life.
1. 15th child of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Maria Thera, powerful Austrian Empress
2. Married off at 16 to 15-year-old future King Louis XVI of France to cement alliance. They had never met, and didn't have a choice.
3. There is no evidence of Marie Antoinette saying ‘let them eat cake’. It was written by a philosopher named Jean-Jacques Roussea at around 1766 when Marie was 11
4. Had few royal duties, so Marie spent most her time indulging in her extravagant tastes
5. Didn’t know about France’s debt
6. Pamphlets spread rumours and poked fun at her
7. Didn’t pay tax
8. Best friend (Princess le Lamballe) was dismembered, body parts paraded through street
9. Her husband was executed January 1793
10. Revolution wasn’t her fault. She was the icon, the representation of everything wrong with the aristocrats.
