When did the battle take place?
The siege began 10th April 1941 and ended at the end of November during WW2.
Why was this an important destination?
The destination was incredibly important for the Allies to defend Egypt and the Suex Canal. By holding the harbour, the Allies forced the enemy to have to bring their supplied from the port of Tripoli, meaning the enemy would have to cross 1500km of desert. Tobruk's deep water also allowed larger ships to be docked. These larger ships could bring food, aumminition, weapons, and even soldiers. Tabruk was also nearby an oil source.

What were the conditions/environment like?
Since the troops were in a desert, there were sand storms, freezing nights, and boiling days.
What was the food like?
The food was terrible, as it was bread with bully beef and stew.
Why were they called the 'Rats of Tobruk'?
A man named William Joyce, or Lord Haw Haw, was a Nazi propagandist. Noticing the soldiers living in dugouts, he gave them the derisive term 'desert rats'. The Australians, however, turned the term into an ironic badge of honour, even encorperating rats onto their insignia.

During the battle of Tobruk the allied forces withstood the countless bombings of the German army and the harsh desert environment over a course of 241 days. Over this time the allied forces managed to keep the important destination as bay from the hands of the German army.

This battle was signficiant because Australia, relativly unskilled, fought against the German army enduring and outlasting an extremly strenuous environment and superior army.
