Who is represented by the commonwealth of Australia?
White people and the government behind them.
Additional Benefits:
The additional benefits included being able freely walk through the streets and being able to enter shops and hotel however maybe not being served. I do not believe these are benefits purely because they should handed out as a prize but should be a birth right as all human beings should be able to walk freely amongst a community without being arrested and be able to enter shops and hotels. I also believe that being able to enter shops and hotels is not a benefit if you are still going to be ridiculed and not offered the same respect as a 'white person'.
My opinion:
Speaking from a justice perspective I believe that the conditions listed on the certificate are totally unjust. I believe this because although they are letting the aboriginals live as 'white people' they should have still let them keep parts of their own culture and beliefs because that is how they were raised and a part of who they are and it was wrong of the white people to strip them of that. It was especially wrong of them to take away their ability to see and interact with others of their culture as that was their family and the people that they loved.
What does assimilate mean?
Assimilate means to understand something fully. In the case of this certificate word assimilate is referring to Joseph Edwards fully understanding the conditions of his exemption and that he will have to understand how to respect and correctly live amongst the white community.
What does segregated housing mean?
Housing segregation is the practice of denying African American or other minority groups equal access to housing through the process of misinformation, denial of realty and financing services, and racial steering.
Would Joseph enjoy living like a white man?
I believe that this question could be answered in many possible ways, as from an aboriginal's perspective there would be positives and negatives to living like a 'white person'. The positives would be quite obvious as the aboriginal would no longer be treated as inferior. However I believe that being an aboriginal and being ridiculed by white people previously he would not ant to live in a society where people have characteristics that push them to behaving as the white people did. Overall, yes Joseph would like being living like a 'white person' as he would be treated as a normal and equal human being. However, I do believe that he would not like living in the 'white people' society. Joseph would have been labelled as a 'white person' but the community would have still seen him as black. I also believe that he would not have enjoyed to live as a 'white person' if it meant never speaking to his loved ones again and not getting to live through his beliefs.
Why do you think SBS is publishing old documents like these?
I believe the SBS is publishing these documents to remind today's society about the mistakes of the past and that equality is now a strong part of our society. I believe it is to reinforce the idea that black people should be treated the same as white people as we are both human beings.
