Tobruk

The siege began 10th April 1941 and ended at the end of November.

 

Why/ how was Australia involved

  • The destination was incredibly important for the Allies to defend Egypt and the Suex Canal. By holding the harbour, the Allies forced the enemy to have to bring their supplied from the port of Tripoli, meaning the enemy would have to cross 1500km of desert. Tobruk's deep water also allowed larger ships to be docked.

 

Significance to Australia (five dot points)

  • Soldiers took the demeaning nickname of 'rats' and turned it into a badge of honour

  • 744 Australian casualties

  • 1,974 Australians wounded

  • Held the position for a  very long time, demonstrating strength

  • Siege had an important impact on the war

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

Kokoda

  • July 1942 – November 1942

  • Territories of Papua and New Guinea

Why/ how was Australia involved

  • Australia was defending a path linking Ower's Corner and a village called Wairopi

 

Significance to Australia (five dot points)

  • Fighting was some of the most vicious fighting done by Australian troops in World War 2

  • 625 Australians killed, over 1,600 wounded

  • 4,000 casualties due to sickness

  • Battle is remembered for strength show by Australia and New Guinea

Bombing of Darwin

When and where did the event occur? Give specific dates and places.

  • 19th of February, 1942 - 12th of November, 1942

  • Darwin, Australia

 

Why/ how was Australia involved

  • Darwin was bombed due to its increasing military presence and threat to Japanese.

 

 

Significance to Australia (five dot points)

  • One of the few times WW2 impacted Australian soil

  • Almost 250 Australian casualties, between 250 - 400 wounded (facts disputed)

  • Darwin was bombed from an army led by the same commander who attacked Pearl Harbour

  • Approximately 680 bombs dropped
